During the colonial expansion of France at the beginning of the century, Hoggar was reached with difficulty by Charles de Foucauld who decided to settle (1905) at the edge of a wadi where water was present. He was thus the principal craftsman of the development of Tamanrasset.

The first queen of Hoggar (according to the legend) was Tin-Hinan. The ancestor of Touaregs.
